Regulators
New
to the school initiatives is the “Regulators,” or kids who monitor the
elementary school corner for community service hours. Basically, one kid every
day will help direct the flow of traffic and kids for a half hour before and
after school.
The
name itself, “Regulators,” comes from Raymond Matt’s contest entry to the
naming competition for the job. Some other ideas like “Captain Traffic” and
“Street Sweeper Safety Krew” were thrown out there, but Student Council’s final
decision was the “Regulators,” and Raymond Matt won a gift card to Cornerstone
Pizza for his submission.
Basically,
the job doesn’t require too much effort physically or mentally, but requires
you to stand around for a half hour. You need to direct and help traffic flow
correctly through the 4-way junction on the west side of the elementary school.
There aren’t too many problems with traffic there because most drivers are
careful when in the presence of small kids, though the Regulator could
supposedly help keep the kids from running in the street.
Even
though it’s uncertain whether or not this job will benefit the children and
traffic, it definitely does help the kids who work. Every student who plans to
graduate from St. Ignatius High School needs to have forty hours of community
service. Therefore, helping the school for an hour a day can really help if
you’re struggling to get some hours in before the end of the year.
Another
plus to the Regulators besides the community service hours is your attire. You
get to look real nice and official with orange vest, and maybe a badge if the
school board allows it!
Karl Daniels and Stuart
Grant have signed up to get the jobs, but so far the “Regulators” haven’t been
put out to work yet. We can probably expect to see them working in the next few
weeks.
